How To Use Content Marketing To Build Your Home Business [Part 1]
What’s content marketing and how can it help you build your home based business online?
In this post, I’m going to be explaining what content marketing is, how you can use it to build your business on social media.
According to contentmarketinginstitute.com:
Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.
It’s all about giving value to your audience (and customers) so that they begin to see you as a credible authority or expert figure and it allows you to build a relationship with them.
Let’s be honest, most people hate ads and hate being pitched. On our computers – we install adblockers, our TVs – we can forward through the commercials. We are learning to ignore the constant advertisements all around us.
I can remember one time we had my family over and decided to watch a movie. This was before we had a TV with Netflix build in, so we had to do it the old school way of streaming videos online from random and not so reputable sites.
As my brother and I hooked up a projector to the computer and went to the site and clicked on the correct movie to watch, we payed no attention to the advertising banners. We had become so accustom to ignoring them that it wasn’t until my mom yelled: “What nonsense are you guys putting up there, don’t you have any shame?!!!”
To our dismay, as well as the discomfort of my grandmother and the rest of the family, we then realized that the site had banners displaying (I’m almost ashamed to write this) “Hot singles in your area” with pictures that were moderately provocative (nothing very bad, but still enough to get yelled at by my mother).
Hence the shift over to content marketing since people are getting better at ignoring ads!
When it comes to your home based business,
you can use content marketing to build your brand and create value in the marketplace instead of using traditional ‘pattern interrupt advertising’.
How do you do this?
The first step if you’re in a home business, is to brand yourself (see WHY you should brand yourself in this post, click here and another post on creating your personal brand).
Then figure out what is your unique message. How can you add your passion and personality in your brand that will attract people to you.
The next step is an important one, who is your target market?
I would strongly recommend thinking about who you’re selling to because of these two powerful quotes:
a) “If you sell to everyone, you’re selling to no one.”
b) If you could see through Jane Doe’s eyes, you can sell what Jane Doe buys.
Now that you know your target market, time to dig deep and find out the answer to these questions.
- What do they want?
- How can you solve their problems?
- What are their needs?
When you understand what your customer wants, then begin to provide value to show how your products and services can benefit THEM, that’s where the magic begins.
In my next post, I’m going to be sharing the second part on how to create content specific to your audience and your business.
